Which again makes me question the validity that oil is solely derived from "fossils". This area was long ago abandoned as not having any oil deposits worth drilling. I think the earth naturally creates oil under the surface due to geological pressures and thermal reactions. Surface components/organic contributors probably play only a part in it's composition and not it's sole source of creation. Considering the size of oil deposits I find it hard to believe that that many prehistoric creatures could have been killed, buried sufficiently deep and then decomposed under just the right conditions to create the oil deposits we find under the surface. It just isn't logical.

1 billion barrels is a lot.

It is mind boggling how much oil the world consumes now. But then considering oil deposits uder the ground are the size of the Great Lakes in some instances and even larger, pumping billions and billions of barrels out is not that much really. Imagine how long it would take to drain even one of the Great Lakes, barrel by barrel...Hundreds of years. And since oil apparently seeps back into fields once thought "dry" I think the "shortage" issue is highly over rated...Just my .02 cents.

It just kinda boggles the mind even though it really may be just a drop in the bucket of the worlds actual supply.
